DTCE was engaged to design a new deck extension to an existing two-storey timber dwelling, spanning over the driveway at the front of the house. The project involved extending the existing balcony at mid-level, requiring an independent structural system due to the increased projection from the building. A combination of timber framing and a steel portal frame was used to support the deck and provide lateral stability, with dedicated foundations designed to resist uplift and ensure overall performance. The structure was analysed for both gravity and seismic actions, with careful consideration given to deflection and connection behaviour. The final design delivers a practical and efficient solution that integrates with the existing building while enabling the extended outdoor space.
