Timber Pole Retaining Wall

Hillside Slope Stabilisation

Khandallah

2022

Following a heavy rainfall event, the existing landscaping retaining wall at the rear of the property collapsed. DTCE has been engaged to design a new timber pole retaining wall to replace the failed walls.

The new retaining wall was designed as a timber pole wall with a maximum retained height of approximately 2 m. The wall was positioned further into the bank to create a larger usable area at the base while maintaining a safe distance from the existing dwelling and neighbouring boundary.

The design considered the steep site geometry and ground conditions, including weathered greywacke and clay-like soils. Soil loads acting on the wall were assessed using Galena, allowing the slope profile and soil cohesion to be considered in the analysis. Geogrid-reinforced backfill was recommended to improve slope stability and reduce the backslope angle above the wall. The project also included design guidance for a smaller adjacent retaining wall along the north side of the site.
