Lifting Frame Design
Whakatane
2025
We have been engaged to design a temporary structural lifting frame for maintenance for periodic cleaning of screens. The works included lifting screens out of the water and then being transferred to their designated area for cleaning, and then back again.
This was a temporary works project comprising two separate design schemes.
First scheme:
The objective of the first scheme was to design a lifting frame that spans over the bridge. The structure was required to safely support 2,500 kg concrete panels, which were lowered into the tunnel to temporarily block water flow and form a dam.
Second scheme:
The objective of the second scheme was to design a separate transporting lifting frame to lift screens from within the dam for periodic maintenance and cleaning, and to transfer them safely to a designated cleaning area.
Our role included identifying key design constraints, confirming loads and site conditions, and providing clear, consent-ready documentation, including a Design Features Report and well-annotated drawings. One key design consideration was the treatment of lateral loads, which were carefully assessed to ensure the lifting systems performed reliably under all expected conditions.
