●Overview
DTCE was engaged to design a new driveway ramp connecting the road to a house approximately 3.5 m below street level. The steep level change, variable ground conditions and flood-zone location required the driveway, retaining walls and foundations to be designed as one integrated system.
●Issue
The new access needed to achieve a practical vehicle gradient while safely supporting the driveway over a significant change in level. Site testing also identified that reliable founding material was relatively deep, requiring piled foundations.
●Solution
DTCE designed masonry walls along both sides of the ramp, supported by intermediate walls for additional stability. A suspended concrete driveway slab was used so the structure would not rely on the long-term settlement of the fill beneath it.
The foundations were supported on concrete piles taken down to firm ground. A combined vehicle and pedestrian barrier was also designed to provide protection along the elevated driveway.
●Result
The completed design provides safe vehicle access from street level to the lower property while addressing retaining, foundation settlement, flood-zone ground conditions and edge protection within a coordinated structural solution.
