Structural remediation of a rural access bridge

Masterton

2022

DTCE was engaged to design remediation works for an existing private access bridge spanning a small stream on a rural road. The bridge provides vehicle access to three residential properties and will also serve two additional houses planned for the site.

The existing structure consisted of timber decking supported by steel and timber beams seated on concrete abutments. Following a site inspection, the abutments were confirmed to be in satisfactory condition and suitable for reuse. The remediation works focused on the design of a new bridge superstructure, including replacement beams and decking spanning between the existing abutments.

The upgraded structure was designed in accordance with the NZTA Bridge Manual requirements for lightly trafficked rural bridges, ensuring the bridge can safely support vehicle loads such as trucks and tractors while extending the service life of the crossing.
