● Overview
The project involved extensive alterations to an occupied two-storey timber-framed dwelling, including internal upgrades, new structural elements, deck replacement and lower roof replacement.
● Scope
DTCE provided structural investigations, LiDAR scanning, design and construction monitoring for extensive alterations to an occupied dwelling with complex existing conditions.
The works included replacement of internal linings and insulation, a new timber beam to the dining area, a new portal frame supported on piles, replacement of the existing deck, and replacement of the lower roof in an extremely high wind zone.
● Solution
Throughout construction, numerous unforeseen issues required engineering assessment, including foundation reuse, revised wall bracing, exposed roof framing that differed from design assumptions, steel detailing and durability requirements.
Working closely with the architect, builder and fabricator, we developed practical solutions that maintained compliance while improving constructability, programme and cost certainty.
● Result
The alterations were successfully adapted around the existing structure and conditions uncovered during construction, allowing the project to progress without compromising the architectural intent or structural performance.
