This calculator helps estimate the likely structural engineering fee for residential Building Consent projects in New Zealand.

It is designed for architects, builders, contractors, and informed homeowners who already have a reasonable idea of the structural design scope.

The estimate is indicative only and is not a formal fee proposal, but it should give you a realistic fee range based on DTCE’s project experience and historical fee data.

This calculator is best suited to:

  • Residential alterations, additions, new builds, and townhouses

  • Architect-led projects

  • Building Consent design work

  • Projects up to approximately $3 million

  • Buildings up to 3 storeys

  • Single dwellings or townhouse-style residential buildings

  • Lightweight timber framing, with or without reinforced concrete block walls

DTCE structural design deliverables may include PS1, structural calculations, drawings, Design Features Report, LBP Memorandum, B1/B2 compliance information, construction monitoring
recommendations, and specifications where required.

If your project includes multiple separate buildings, complete a separate calculation for each building.

sed scope

How to use the calculator

For each item in the calculator, select the number of Specific Engineering Design (SED) parts required or choose Yes/No. For example, if your project requires 4 specific engineered beams, select 4. If an item is not required, select 0.

Site & Ground Conditions

Site specific wind assessment required

Select Yes if DTCE needs to determine/calculate the site wind speed

Site visit or soil testing required

Select Yes if you require a site visit for any purpose. The site visit could be for soil testing, an inspection, or an investigation of any kind.

Split level floors on sloping ground

Select Yes if the building floor levels step up or down with sloping ground. stepped floor levels are much trickier to design and detail for.

Foundations & floor structure

SED foundation design required

Choose "Mixed" if the style of foundation design changes across the building, like there is a timber subfloor on part and concrete foundation on another part.

Suspended concrete slab above ground level

Select Yes if there is a first floor concrete slab, traydeck slab, or other concrete floor structure not bearing directly on the ground

Superstructure & Bracing

Number of SED beam types/locations

Beams can be steel, timber or block masonry. An SED joist, rafter, or lintel size counts as one. This assumes posts and connection details also specified by engineer.

Number of portal frame locations

If a portal is repeated across duplicated townhouses, it's only 1 portal frame design. But if there are different locations in a house then it's multiple portals.

Number of floors requiring SED bracing design

Enter total number of floors/storeys requiring SED bracing. Bracing can be diagonal timber braces, GIB, plywood or blockwalls.

Are any walls using reinforced block masonry

This is additional to the bracing design because blockwalls have extra out of plane checks and detailing.

External & additional structural items

Number of retaining wall types / sizes (block or timber)

Enter number of different retaining walls requiring SED. Specialist retaining walls (e.g spray and pin) require double the time , so double the number.

SED Balustrade or balustrade support required

Most balustrades don't need engineering input, however examples that do include glass balustrade in an SED wind zone.
