This calculator helps estimate the likely structural engineering fee for residential Building Consent projects in New Zealand.

It is designed for architects, builders, contractors, and informed homeowners who already have a reasonable idea of the structural design scope.

The estimate is indicative only and is not a formal fee proposal, but it should give you a realistic fee range based on DTCE’s project experience and historical fee data.

This calculator is best suited to:

  • Residential alterations, additions, new builds, and townhouses

  • Architect-led projects

  • Building Consent design work

  • Projects up to approximately $3 million

  • Buildings up to 3 storeys

  • Single dwellings or townhouse-style residential buildings

  • Lightweight timber framing, with or without reinforced concrete block walls

DTCE structural design deliverables may include PS1, structural calculations, drawings, Design Features Report, LBP Memorandum, B1/B2 compliance information, construction monitoring
recommendations, and specifications where required.

If your project includes multiple separate buildings, complete a separate calculation for each building.

How to use the calculator

For each item in the calculator, select the number of structural parts required. For example, if your project requires 4 specifically engineered beams, select 4.  If an item is not required, select 0.

Scala penetrometer and hand auger. A full geotechnical report is usually not needed for low rise lightweight residential projects.

Bracing can be diagonal timber braces, GIB, plywood or blockwalls.

If a portal is repeated across duplicated townhouses, it's only 1 portal frame design. But if there are different locations in a house then it's multiple portals.

This is additional to the bracing design because blockwalls have extra out of plane checks and detailing.

SED beams could be steel or timber or block masonry. An SED joist size or an SED rafter size counts as one size. Lintels count as one size. This assumes the posts and connection details will also be specified by the engineer.

Choose "Mixed" if the style of foundation design changes across the building, like there is a timber subfloor on part and concrete foundation on another part.

Like a traydeck slab

Stepped floor levels are much trickier to design and detail for.

If we are designing something that isn't traditional block or timber (for example spray and pinned wall, you can just assume 2 walls for pricing as it can take twice as long for a more special retaining wall)

Most balustrades don't need engineering input.

If there is a car deck then a crash barrier is very likely to be needed.

Just add 1 for each thing.
